I went down from the car and I could see everyone outside the door wearing red. I was greeted Kung Hei Fat Choi by everyone as I entered the door. I can smell the food on the table. I walked towards it and a mirage of colors greeted my eyes. The table was tempting. Mounts of desserts adorned the table covered with red cloth. Mouth watering food lined up for my eyes to feast on. A plate of Diao Eng Chay (fruit gelatine moulded like a fish) is irresistible. But my mom said I can’t eat some until 12 midnight strikes. All these food makes my stomach growl and I can’t even have a crumb of cookie. Its considered bad luck to eat from the table before 12. You may ask me why I am celebrating Chinese New Year. My surname doesnt sound mandarin and I don’t even look like Chinese. It’s because my great grandfather (maternal side) came from main land China. Tradition is kept alive because my mom is still quarter Chinese. Another thing is that we are given foods by our Chinese family friends. All the rituals are still kept so that it wont die down. In fact, later at 12 midnight we would all gather in front of the house facing north east and we would bow to the heavens 9 times. This isn’t unusual in our community in New Manila because 70% of the residents here have Chinese blood. Moving on, I was supposed to go to debate practice a while ago but I was informed that there will be no practices for this week. Ive decided to join debate! To tell you frankly I have prepared for this and I think I can handle it. I had doubts about my capabilities but Ive studied the pros and cons of joining debate society. From the looks of it, I have more to gain than to lose. Why not go for it? Just like Robert Frost I believe that the road not taken is the best path to travel. I can say that I enjoyed the trip because it was different from what others would usually do. I made a conclusion that debate would mold me into becoming a better person. Debate would develop my rational skills, reasoning, analytical thinking, speech and knowledge. Before I used to fear arguing but I have realized that arguing is not really violent. Its merely proving your points without having to hurt anyone physically. Violence occurs when we stop arguing and we start getting physical because we cannot formulate an answer to a question being hurled unto us. In fact, arguing is part of human instinct. For example, don’t we argue with ourselves when we are making a major decision? One good example is when I thought about joining debate society. Didnt I thought about its pros and cons? See, arguing is a natural part of human instinct. Anyway, I went to National Bookstore a while ago. I was in search of a scientific calculator when suddenly Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons” met my eyes. I just had the driving force to buy it. Im a big fan of Dan Brown I knew I just had to get this one. I also purchased my favorite Pinoy author’s book entitled ABNKKBSNPLAko?! (Aba Nakakabasa na pala Ako). Bob Ong is the greatest pinoy author since Jessica Zafra. Speaking of Jessica, where can I buy her books? Im really searching far and wide to buy it. I used to read portions of her book when I was in 7th grade. Unfortunately, I cant seem to find her books nowadays. Anyway, Dont you just hate it when people misinterpret you? I really hate it when it happens. I dont want to elaborate on this. Something is weird about me today. Believe it or not Im so into studying and doing my assignments today. Its so weird I could hear the hallelujah chorus! Anyway, here’s an additional information that I want to share with you. I heard it over the radio a while ago. Did you know that the most expensive coffee in the world costs $600 per teaspoon. It can be found in Indonesia and its commonly known as kape sawak. What makes this special is its made from guano. Yes, it’s a stinking crap of a marsupial. Now that’s one coffee I’d never drink even if it costs a fortune.
